The Elusive Collage Wall

Most of us have a basic idea of how to arrange the art in our homes. We need a piece above the mantle, a large piece above the sofa, an maybe some family portraits in the hall. When it comes to groupings however, we tend to freak out a little. "What if the pieces are hung too tightly? Do they have to all be the same frame? I'm just not creative enough to know when it looks right." These are things we hear all of the time at the gallery and we want you all to know that we're here to help!
First off, if you have art that you are dying to hang on your walls, you're half way there. Your art represents your unique style and the way you display it should too.

These are some of our favorite tips for creating the perfect grouping:

1.) Tape off the perimeter of the hanging or lay pieces out on the floor to help keep things balanced.

2.) Whether you hang the individual components closely or with more space, keep things consistent.

3.) Include a mixture of medias. Paintings, drawings, photographs.

4.) Use a variety of frame shapes and sizes. Use pairs to indicate a relationship.

5.)  Frames should coordinate but not necessarily match. Try to stick to a basic color scheme. Dark woods, aged metallic, black and/or white.

Above all, make your collage unique and personal. If you need any help, just come in and ask.

Here are some great grouping ideas from our friends at Roma Moulding:
